Can I Install Heat Demons on My Harley? In most cases, absolutely!

One of the most common support calls we get is: "Can I Install Heat Demons on my Harley?" The answer, in most cases, is yes!

Let's start with Harley Davidson. Harley has two types of throttle mechanisms, traditional and "fly by wire" (TBW) or "electronic" throttle. On traditional Harley throttles, the throttle tube under the grip actuates 2 cables that control the throttle on the engine. In this case, it is very easy to install Heat Demons inside the tubes. In short, you remove the grips, install the heaters and wires, install the controller, make the battery connection, and put everything back together. Most shops can do this install in about 1.5 hours.

If you do have a fly by wire throttle, common since 2008 on Harley's high end touring bikes, in most cases you can still install Heat Demons without much difficulty. The only difference is there is a throttle module or sensor inside the handlebar, The Heat Demon heater is installed inside the bar, but outside the throttle unit. Heat Demons shipped since mid-2011 all are capable of accommodating this type of throttle, you can tell by the heaters in your kit. If there is one that is longer than the other, you are good to go.

There are some factory Harley's, with fly by wire throttles, that will not work with Heat Demons without modification. These include the 2008-2010 Road Glide and all CVO models. In these cases, the inside diameter of the handlebar is too small, and the heater won't fit. Some people modify their handlebars by reaming them out to accommodate the grips, however, we cannot advise that you do that without potentially sacrificing the strength of the bar. Consult your preferred Harley Davidson technician for advice in this regard.

Most aftermarket bars also accomodate our heaters with electronic or standard throttle, with some exceptions. If you're not sure, call or email Heat Demon support or check out our website, HeatDemon
